Beneficiary for the Kitchen Kapers Tour 2008:  Salvation Army Kitchen Project

The Salvation Army Winchester Corps “Center of Hope” opened in August 1995 at 300 Fort Collier Road. The Homeless Shelter and accompanying kitchen was designed and built to provide lodging and meals for 24 persons.

 Around 1998 the lodging capacity was doubled to 48 persons by replacing all the single beds with bunk beds, however no changes were made to the kitchen facilities. The fiscal year before we doubled capacity we served 21,115 meals; the year we doubled capacity we prepared and served 39,793 meals.  With the increase in the homeless population since then, we can average 70 to 75 residents per night during cold weather. 

 From the same kitchen facilities built in 1995, designed to provide approximately 26,000 meals per year, we served almost 72,000 meals last year. The current planned project should have been completed at least four years ago.
