Beneficiary for the Kitchen Kapers Tour 2007:  Faith in Action

Faith in Action - Winchester/ Frederick County was founded in 2003 by a coalition and Valley Health.  Our Faith in Action program brings together people of different faiths to help their neighbors in need.  Faith in Action is run by trained volunteers who help neighbors by providing transportation to medical appointments, pick up a few groceries, run errands or just check on the elderly or chronically ill.  Faith in Action provides these services on a limited budget.  One paid employee and a volunteer work a combined total of 50 hours per week.  Trained and dedicated volunteers provide all other services and support.  2005 marked the last of the seed monies, a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.  It receives additional financial support from Valley Health System and The Winchester Medical Center Foundation, and private donations.  The volunteer networks of different faiths drive their personal car or use the Red Cross Van.  Red Cross collaborates with medical transportation.

What makes Faith in Action distinctive among the numerous county agencies and non-profit groups is that they care for the people who "fall through the cracks" of traditional services.  Many are adults who are physically disabled, blind, live alone, elderly and 27% of the transportation service is for weekly dialysis treatments.  During 2006 - 2007, more than 1,000 medical transports have been provided.  To volunteer, contact them at (540) 536 -1006.
